In 1609, French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, discovered Lake Champlain, shorty after this, France claimed Vermont as part of New France. In the year 1690, a group of Dutch-British settlers from the Albany New York area under the leadership of Captain Jacobus de Warm established a stockade near the present day city of Addison In 1731, the French arrived to bolster their claim on the territory.. Fort St. Frederic was constructed in 1734, when completed, the fort gave the French control of the New France/Vermont. The British tried four times to take control of the French Fort St. Frédéric between 1755 and 1758. In 1759, a force of 12,000 British regular and provincial troops captured the fort. The French were driven out of the area.. A year later, a group of Mohawk Indians burnt the settlement to the ground. The 1763 Treaty of Paris gave control of New France/Vermont to the British. For the first six months of the republic's existence, the state was called New Connecticut. Vermont is one of the 13 colonies to form the United States of America. |
