Explorers and settlers began entering Kentucky in the mid-1700s Kentucky grew rapidly as the first settlements west of the Appalachian’s were founded. The first settlers to the area came from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. The first part of Kentucky to be settled was along the Ohio River. Lexington and Washington were the first settlements. Daniel Boone is considered one of the founders of the state. The Shawnee Indians were not happy with the new settlements in the region, now called Kentucky and allied with the British forces during the revolutionary war, hoping that the settlers would be removed from the territory by the British. Kentucky became the fifteenth state to be admitted to the union.
