Virginia Classic Prints and Maps

English settlers reached the land now known as Virginia in 1607. The first settlement in the area was Jamestown. Tobacco became a very profitable crop for exportation, and the colony of Virginia became one of the most populated and wealthiest colonies in America.

Virginia is one of the original 13 United States that won their independence from Great Britain at the end of the Revolutionary War.

Four of our nations first presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe) were from Virginia.

Virginia seceded from the United States in 1861. The state of Virginia was a major battlefield of the American Civil War. The westernmost counties of Virginia were opposed to slavery and broke away from the eastern part of the state to form West Virginia in 1863.

.The year 2007 marked the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown.
