In 1673, Father Jackques Marquette and Louis Joliet sailed a canoe down the Mississippi River from what is now Minneapolis Minnesota to the gulf of Mexico. Nine years later, Robert Cavalier claimed the land known as Louisiana Territory, which included Missouri. In the 1720's settlers began to arrive along the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes in the north to the Gulf in Louisiana.
